In 1994 Springer began working
with New York Times reporter
Dennis Covington to document
and explore serpent handling
in southern Appalachia. Her
striking images were included in
Covington's book, Salvation on
Sand Mountain, which won
the American Book Award and
was nominated for the
National Book Award.
